Prof Manoj Sivan featured as a BMJ Role Model
We are delighted to share that Professor Manoj Sivan, BSPRM RCS Chair, has been featured in a BMJ Role Model piece, recognising his outstanding contribution to Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM), clinical academia, and the development of future generations of clinicians.
The article highlights Prof Sivan’s long-standing commitment to rehabilitation medicine and his belief in “adding life to years, not just years to life.” As Professor of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Leeds and an Honorary NHS Consultant at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, he champions a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to care for people with long-term conditions and complex disabilities.
The feature reflects on his academic leadership and dedication to teaching and mentorship, including his efforts to encourage medical students and trainees to engage in research and consider careers in clinical academia.
Prof Sivan has held several influential leadership roles nationally and internationally. He is a former President of BSPRM, served as the World Health Organization’s ambassador for PRM during the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2024 became the first UK physician to receive the Sidney Licht Award from the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine for lifetime achievement.
Notably, Prof Sivan was nominated by Rosie Solomon, a Foundation Year 2 doctor he has mentored, underscoring the impact of his approachability, generosity with his time, and commitment to supporting junior colleagues. Being recognised by a mentee makes this acknowledgement particularly meaningful, reflecting his influence not only as a leader in the field, but also as a role model who actively shapes and inspires early career clinicians.
We congratulate Prof Sivan on this well-deserved recognition and thank him for his continued leadership, advocacy for rehabilitation medicine, and commitment to inspiring the next generation.
