Previous taster day: Sheffield, October 2025
On 4 October 2025, BSPRM had the pleasure of hosting a Rehabilitation Medicine Taster Day for medical students at Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, home of the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Centre.
The event introduced students to the breadth and depth of Rehabilitation Medicine, a specialty dedicated to restoring function, independence and quality of life for people living with disabling conditions.
The programme provided an exciting whistle-stop tour of the specialty through a combination of interactive workshops, engaging talks and hands-on demonstrations. Students explored the major subspecialties of Rehabilitation Medicine, including spinal cord injury, neurorehabilitation, major trauma, musculoskeletal rehabilitation and amputee rehabilitation.
A particular highlight was the focus on cutting-edge technology. Participants experienced how innovations including exoskeletons, robotics, virtual reality and brain-computer interfaces are transforming clinical practice and improving patient outcomes.
Attendees also heard from people with lived experience of spinal cord injury, providing a powerful insight into the life-changing impact of rehabilitation.
One of the attendees wrote a reflective report summarising the sessions, key takeaways and their overall experience of the event. Their account offers valuable insight into the day’s activities and highlights the benefits of attending for those considering a career in Rehabilitation Medicine.
